B.K.S. Iyengar

B.K.S. Iyengar was born in southern India in 1918. He has been practising and teaching yoga since he was 16 years old and is considered to be the father of modern yoga.

He studied the physical and mental structure of more than 200 asana’s (poses) and of pranayama (breathwork) and described their medical and philosophical aspects in his book, ‘Light on yoga’.  This
book is considered by many as the ‘bible of yoga’ and is being used as a teachers manual all over the world.

Iyengar developed the use of props in yoga making the asanas equally accessible to yoga students of all levels. He runs with his son Prashant and his daughter Geeta the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India.

If extension is from the intelligence of the brain, expansion is from the intelligence of the heart. Extension and expansion always stay firmly rooted in one's center. They originate from the core of one's being. (...) When you extend and expand, you are not only stretching to, you are also stretching from.
